Integrating IoT in Engineering Design:

Incorporating the Internet of Things (IoT) concept into engineering design can revolutionize the way products and systems are conceived, developed, and operated.

IoT refers to the network of interconnected devices and sensors that collect and exchange data, enabling real-time monitoring, control, and analysis.

Here’s how AI and IoT can work together in engineering design:

  • Smart Sensing and Data Collection:

    • IoT devices and sensors can be embedded in products and structures to collect data on their performance, usage, and environmental conditions.
    • AI can then process this data, providing valuable insights into the behavior and health of the designed systems.
    • This real-time feedback loop can lead to more informed design decisions and proactive maintenance strategies.
  • Predictive Maintenance:

    • AI can analyze data from IoT-enabled devices to predict when maintenance is required or when components are likely to fail.
    • By integrating these insights into the design process, engineers can create more reliable and durable products, minimizing downtime and maintenance costs.
  • Performance Optimization:

    • IoT data can be used to monitor the performance of products and systems in real-world conditions.
    • AI can analyze this data to identify areas for improvement, enabling engineers to optimize the design and enhance efficiency, safety, and functionality.

Revit and AI-powered Design:

Revit, a Building Information Modeling (BIM) software developed by Autodesk, has become an essential tool in the architecture, engineering, and construction industries.

When combined with AI-powered design capabilities, Revit becomes even more powerful and versatile:

  • Automated Parametric Design:

    • Revit, with AI integration, can generate parametric designs based on specific input parameters and constraints.
    • The software can automatically create and modify design iterations, allowing engineers to explore various possibilities and optimize their designs efficiently.
  • Energy Analysis and Optimization:

    • By leveraging AI algorithms, Revit can perform energy analysis and optimization on building designs.
    • It can suggest energy-efficient solutions and help engineers meet sustainability and regulatory requirements.

    • IoT devices and sensors can be incorporated into building designs through Revit’s BIM capabilities.
    • This integration allows for better collaboration between architects, engineers, and other stakeholders throughout the design, construction, and operation phases of a building.

AI is here to inspire you

AI’s generative design is a cutting-edge approach to engineering design that enables you to explore a vast design space and generate optimized solutions.

You can move beyond traditional design methods, leveraging computational power and machine learning techniques, and discover innovative and efficient designs.

Some of the ways AI can “wow” you are:

  • Guided design:

    • AI can also guide you in the design process, offering recommendations, providing design rules, and assisting in decision-making – all based on documented engineering knowledge and best practices.
  • Generative design:

    • AI can generate multiple designs based on your design requirements and the constraints you define, such as structural integrity, material properties, manufacturing limitations, and cost considerations.
    • You can define multiple criteria, such as weight reduction, structural strength, material usage, cost minimization, or performance improvement.
    • The algorithm then generates designs that strike a balance between these competing objectives, creating trade-off solutions effectively.
  • Iterative design:

    • AI uses computational techniques, such as evolutionary algorithms, genetic algorithms, or machine learning, to generate designs.
    • However, these designs serve only as starting points for further refinement and customization.
    • You can review the generated design alternatives and select those that best meet the desired objectives and constraints.
    • You can also let the technology iteratively modify and optimize the chosen designs based on your expertise, your feedback, and additional constraints.

Generative design can provide you with fresh design perspectives and inspire innovative solutions.

By exploring unconventional design options, AI challenges traditional design approaches and pushes the boundaries of what is considered feasible or optimal.

This can lead to breakthrough designs that are more efficient, lightweight, structurally sound, and visually striking.

To sum up, AI and IoT are not meant to replace engineering design professionals but rather to augment their creativity and expertise.

You will continue to play a critical role in setting design objectives, evaluating design iterations, interpreting results, and incorporating domain knowledge into the process.

The collaboration between AI, IoT, and human experts can lead to synergistic outcomes, combining the power of computational analysis and human ingenuity.

Hence, AI and IoT are here to relieve you of digital drudgery and to inspire you to be more creative.

What more can you ask for?

PPM Primavera and ChatGPT's Role

Recently, The Economist published a chart showing the jobs that ChatGPT is likely to take away from people. The list of “endangered” jobs includes telemarketers, teachers, traders, and professionals in the sectors such as securities and commodity contracts, insurance carriers, data processing and hosting, information services, and publishing.

Technically speaking, ChatGPT is a “generative” Artificial Intelligence. Simply put, it is nothing but a chatbot with the capability to come out with its own answers to our questions. Millions of people right now are having intelligent conversations with this tool. If ChatGPT can speed up a human job by at least 50%, companies will not hire people for the job – instead, they will give the job to ChatGPT.

ChatGPT and Primavera

Project Management does not figure in the list – at least not yet. But ChatGPT is not bad news for project managers. Any profession that wants excellence will need to adopt AI in whatever form it appears. One of the ways to use ChatGPT for project management is to integrate it with PPM software such as Primavera. Chat GPT 3, an advanced version, has an API that allows developers to build conversational AI applications. When the API is integrated with Primavera, it can enable PM professionals to generate human-like responses to text input.

There are many ways in which ChatGPT can contribute to the field of Project Management, and help professionals in this field become more productive. Sooner or later ChatGPT will become a subject of PPM courses and PPM training programs. And it will not be a surprise if PPM Certifications can also take into consideration a professional’s ChatGPT exposure. Here are a few areas where ChatGPT integration with Primavera can make a big difference in managing projects:

Summarisation

ChatGPT is primarily a Language Model – a “large language model” at that. It means that the tool can analyse large bodies of text and data that reside in Primavera, and have that as a basis for summarising project documents, reports, and other long-form text instantly. We can instruct it to include specific topics or subjects and give it a specific word count as well. ChatGPT with Primavera can create reports for all stakeholders including team members, vendors, and stakeholders.

Intelligent Conversations

With Primavera, ChatGPT becomes a Project Management chatbot with which project managers can have engaging conversations. Instead of going through voluminous documents, they can instantly get answers for specific questions such as: “What is the project status?”, “What is the timeline for building construction?”, “How much is left in my budget?”, and so on.

Decision making

The ability of ChatGPT to “think” on its own helps it cull out information and generate insights at a more granular level and on different aspects. This ability can go a long way in helping project managers in the “executive-level” areas such as problem-solving and decision-making. For instance, with ChatGPT professionals can make informed decisions in delegating tasks and managing team members. ChatGPT can even objectively recommend team members who are suitable and available for specific tasks, going by their skills and workload.

Predictive Analytics

As ChatGPT gets trained with Primavera’s database, it can conduct real-time analyses and offer specific predictions. Its predictive analytics capabilities could come in handy when there is a need to project a project’s future status and assess and mitigate potential risks. The chatbot can also generate alerts on potential delays, resource requirements, based on its reading of project timeline, budget, and risks, and project progress.

Learning

ChatGPT can work with external content as well as Primavera’s data concerning local projects and portfolios, and come out with industry best practices, project management methodologies, as well as guidelines for specific projects. This way, ChatGPT with Primavera can be used as a learning tool for training and professional development.

PPM Courses and Training of the Future

It is important to note that ChatGPT is not going to replace enterprise applications. Instead, it is there to add a smart chat feature to them. With ChatGPT, Primavera can provide a more engaging experience to its users. Considering such benefits, project management students and professionals who pursue PPM courses and PPM training should pay special attention to the aspect of making better use of ChatGPT in their work.

Coexistence makes sense

Professionals will continue to use Primavera for all key domains: from robust scheduling to advanced dependency management. There are many areas in that ChatGPT does not have any meaningful role to play. As it stands today, it cannot implement organizational breakdown structures and work breakdown structures, resources, activity constraints, and Gantt charts. It cannot schedule work the way Primavera does. Besides, Primavera too has its own intelligence as it has a long history of processing small and large projects, programs, and portfolios around the world and in different industries.

Hence, it is important for project managers to find a way out to enjoy the best of both worlds: Primavera and ChatGPT. They both can coexist in the enterprise and project management software ecosystem, with their integration providing unthinkable benefits to project sponsors, teams, and clients alike.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is known as a revolutionary force to transform the construction industry. It is considered another breakthrough computer application technology for the construction industry after computer-aided design. The BIM methodology seeks to integrate processes and professionals involved in engineering tasks by working on platforms with coordinated and intelligent 3D virtual models. BIM has great potential for structural engineering companies (SEC) and solves their most salient problems.

Building Information Modeling simplifies incorporation, compatibility and connection in the construction industry by providing a 3D view of a project containing all parameters and its mechanisms. It is ideal for transferring information to improve building design and presentation. Different BIM-based software, used depending on the job and needs, results in data loss during the information exchange process and unwanted duplication of job data retrieval.

BIM Course enhances knowledge sharing management, reducing the time and cost of solving problems related to constructability and project coordination. In addition, it allows architects and structural engineers to visualize modifications and conflicts and assists immediate decision making, significantly reducing rework and optimizing project times and costs. Also, by detecting errors in advance and automating variables that were traditionally used in “manual” processes, BIM enhances automation of detail engineering and documentation processes, reducing work times and increasing project quality.

In some developed countries of the Americas and Europe, the number of construction projects using BIM technology has exceeded that of traditional construction projects. Architects and engineers share information more effectively related to sustainability with the help of BIM applications, such as daylighting and energy consumption, and thus the sustainability analysis can be seamlessly integrated into the design process. BIM is also helpful for designers to utilize the existing building data to improve the default configuration of building early stages of new building design. BIM software provides efficient solutions to ease the environmental effects of the construction process.

The various factors which affect the energy use of a building include building location, size and shape and its parts. In internal spaces, heat and light occurred which reduces the need for energy use. It results in improved efficiency and reduced energy use by reducing heating and lighting units. In the energy simulation process, BIM is considered an important factor for users to create a high

potential in sustainable building design. Thus, evaluate the energy performance effectively before constructing the building on site.

HVAC stands for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. This system provides heating and cooling to residential and commercial buildings. From single-family homes to submarines you can find HVAC systems provide the means for environmental comfort. These systems use fresh air from outdoors to provide high indoor air quality. The V in HVAC or ventilation is the process of replacing or exchanging air within a space. This process involves the removal of moisture, smoke, odors, heat, dust, airborne bacteria, carbon dioxide, and other gases as well as temperature control and oxygen replenishment providing a better quality of air indoors.

There are three main functions of an HVAC system, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning providing acceptable indoor air quality and thermal comfort. The heating element usually refers to a furnace or boiler. The ventilation element is natural or forced and when it is forced it is more often than not used for air cleaning purposes as well. The third and final element of an HVAC system is air conditioning which is the exact opposite of heating. Removing the existing heat from the interior of the home is its main focus.

Air conditioners function by taking heat and humidity from your home and releasing it outside for eventually dropping the temperature in your home. All parts of the central cooling system must work together to complete this process. When the temperature in your home needs to be changed, central cooling kicks off. The thermostat will alert your cooling unit that the temperature needs to drop, and all parts will work simultaneously to get your space to your desired temperature.

Central heating systems can work in the same way as central cooling systems which move air around to change the temperature in your home. Central heating systems move the hot air in to get your home to your desired temperature instead of moving the hot air out. An HVAC device might actually be producing its own heat depending on what HVAC system that is. Heat pumps have the same parts as a split-system air conditioner and work in the same way. When the temperature drops and a heat pump needs to provide heat, the process essentially reverses itself. Once a heat pump registers the function shift, a reversing valve in the outdoor unit kicks on allowing the heat pump to absorb heat energy from the outside air and transfer it into the home to warm it up.

Project management is essentially directing a team to accomplish the milestones and follow up with the team’s performance for the given project in the given time frame. For engineers, project management could include purchasing resources needed, cost management, and scheduling, etc. Engineering is a complex and ever-evolving industry, and new functional aspects are continuously being added to the process. From the drawing board to the final light switch, an engineering project manager must have a firm grasp on the complete project and the people involved.

As AI (Artificial Intelligence), IoT (Internet of Things), and IT/OT, in particular, become more prevalent in the engineering process, project management skills will become more significant in an engineer’s role. An engineer’s project management skills include leadership, organization and effective communication.

The first step into improving the project management skills would be experience application. The best project managers have had direct experience in the field helping them to grasp the workflow more tangibly, but it also helps them understand the potential problems more quickly. An experienced project manager will be better equipped for the unique challenges of the industry depending on the engineering project.

The second step is effective communication. To be successful with a project, communication is probably the most crucial skill-set an Engineering Project Manager should have. For Engineering projects, communication skills start with a solid foundational knowledge of the technological field with the project. Communication in engineering project management involves a large number of different types of project participants, each with a different set of requirements at any given time.

The third step is improving leadership skills. Every project involves a team. The team dynamics fluctuate to meet the demands of the goals set in the initial scope of work and the associated variations in the scope that naturally occur throughout the project. The Project Manager, as a part of their leadership role, is responsible for defining the scope, establishing tasks and goals, and assigning responsibility based on team member capabilities.

The next one is problem-solving. Being a great problem solver is very essential as no projects will go as planned, there tends to be a lot of problems and miscommunication arising in between the projects. The project manager has to be a very quick problem solver and his problem-solving skills will depend upon his field experience and working with others.

Being intuitive and persistent will add to the characteristics of a good project manager who will be able to prioritize and smartly delegate the work to the right people at the right time to ensure the project is completed effectively and efficiently at the given time.

There was a time when all one needed was a degree to find a respectable job. But today, degree is not the only parameter. Instead, skills and talent are the priorities that recruiters look for in any job aspirant. This is the reason, gaining new skills and knowledge is becoming a trend among the freelancers and students. A survey reported that freelancers and job aspirants are keener about skill development as they consider it more useful in their life as compared to the four years of college degree. Also, the cost of education is soaring, and students are getting indebted while acquiring degrees that not even guarantees a good job.

Rapid Technological Advancement and Rising Education Costs

The technology is advancing at a fast pace, and so is the demand for new skills. Also, with every passing year the cost of education is rising. Consequently, people are becoming more interested in pursuing skill development courses over degree courses as they are cheaper to accomplish and they open more excellent job opportunities for aspirants.

Currently, the most in-demand jobs and occupations are those which are skill-based and did not even exist a few years back. The existing educational system does not cover all these specialties as a result of which students are directed towards skill learning opportunities so that they could acquire a good job.

New Non-Traditional Modes of Education

The future will be about skills and not degrees, so one must strive for gaining more skills than acquiring more education. Therefore, new non-traditional education options are booming. These are often focused on the most in-demand skills requiring aspiring candidates to attend campus-based/project-based institutions, like the Holberton School or online programs such as e-learning sites like Coursera or Udemy.

The increasing demand for non-conventional learning options is offering the best opportunity for skill development and is opening new vistas for career growth. Every aspiring candidate must look forward to it to prepare oneself for the futuristic jobs.
